TV has just been ‘Joost’-ed!

posted by: John Vincent Hilario

This is part one, in a two part article about Joost, this part will be an introduction about Joost. Part two will be a review, or rather a preview since it hasn’t actually been released to the public, I am one of the lucky few who actually has a beta invite.

From the innovators who brought you the peer-to-peer file sharing program Kazaa, and the free peer-to-peer online phone carrier Skype, now introduce Joost™ (pronounced “juiced”), an Internet television application that’s transposed the television industry. Co-founders Janus Friis, 30, and Niklas Zennström, 40, are known for “sticking it to the man” with their programs that put the control back to the people. Joost™ works like an on-demand television, removing all of its negative qualities, one of which being what Friis describes as “televisions being locked in linear time”. Joost™ offers “high-quality full-screen picture, hundreds of full-length shows and easy channel-flipping.”

“At Joost™ just about all our software is built on top of open source stuff, and we’re proud of it! These pages attempt to skim the surface of what we do with open source, and also provide a glimpse of how we try to contribute back to the community.”

Running on similar software to that of Skype, Friis and Zennström added a P2P video streaming layer to that core technology, i.e. Joltid Global Index Software.Originally given the alias “The Venice Project”, Joost™ is compatible with Windows and more recently Mac and Linux. Signed with Warner Music, production company Endemol and recently media giant Viacom (press release), Joost™ is able to bring you network programming from networks such as MTV, BET and Paramount Pictures, just to name a few (see the complete list of channels here) — a clear competitor to ‘YouTube’.Set to debut this spring, Joost™ is expected to be like a freshly squeezed glass of orange juice, with promising capabilities to deliver refreshing satisfaction.

I know it is rather unorthodox to ask favors of a complete stranger. But if their beta invites are anything like Gmail’s than I was hoping you might have one to spare to a lowly web stumbler.

Im honestly rather surprised that you dont have many more people asking for an invite, or maybe you have filtered their comments, either way. If you have one to spare, I have been keeping my eye on Joost for a long time now and had never, until now, run across anyone with beta access and invites. It would be unimaginably appreciated if you could spare one. Not too mention eternally convenient since I am about to leave for Japan by the end of the week. It would give me and my friends something to do late night trapped in our hotel room.

However if you cant spare one that is understandable. I am sure this whole Joost thing is rather high in demand right now. Just stumbled by and thought it might not hurt to ask. ^_^ Thanks for your time and understanding.
