posted by: Vlad Akilov

Here is a great list that I whipped together of some of the most useful and most popular Wordpress plugins, if you don’t yet have wordpress, or don’t know what it is head over to wordpress.org, its a blogging software, which is awesome!
Enjoy the list.

Akismet - Is a spam filter that checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they are spam or not, also checks the trackbacks for spam.

Ultimate Tag Warrior - Best Tag system for WordPress. You can use categories and tag system on one website which is very cool.

Exec-PHP - Execute PHP code in posts or static pages. When this plugin is on you can add php code to static pages or even posts.

Google Sitemaps - This generator will create a Google compliant sitemap of your WordPress blog.

No Ping Wait - Speeds up posting by moving generic pings to execute-pings.php.

PXS Mail Form - Creates a mail form with multipart verification, various messages and an auto redirect on successful send. It is much more easy to contact with website author.

Super Archive - Implements a dynamic archive, the best archives system i know.

SRG Clean Archives - Super clean archive. Very simple and useful.

WP lightbox 2 - Overlay images on the current page for WordPress. You can turn it on and all images are now working with it.

fQuick - Sidenotes, short notes for WordPress. You can place it for example in sidebar.

CG-FlashyTitles - Implementation of sIFR 2.0 Flash-based - Nice graphical flash titles for WP. Very easy to install.

flickrRSS - Integrate the photos from a flickr rss feed into your site. Show flickr photos on your website.

Gravatars - Adds a nice looking graphic next to the persons comments.

Get Recent Comments - Display the most recent comments or trackbacks with your own formatting in the sidebar or where you want.

WP Paginate - Create pagination for pages. It is the best plugin for that makes navigation easy with many static pages.

wp-notable - Add social bookmark links such as digg or del.icio.us to each blog entry

Adsense-Deluxe - Support for AdSense ads and allows you to add ads to posts.

WP-ContactForm - A way for people to contact you without actually emailing you, saves time, and great way to avoid spam.

PodPress - Got a podcast? PodPress makes it really easy to post podcasts, also includes an inline media player.

Related Posts - Link to related posts on your blog, which is based on the content of the post.

Update:

WP-Cache - An extremely efficient WordPress page caching system to make your site much faster and responsive. It works by caching Worpress pages and storing them in a static file for serving future requests.

I posted a similar list of favorites on my blog a few weeks ago and am glad to see that a lot of the items on your list match my own.

I updated my Akismet plugin with the modified version made by Rich Boakes. His version gives the option of adding the IP address of the spammers into your htaccess file and blocking the spammers from even accessing your site. I went from getting 20-30 spam comments a day down to 1-3 per week. Plus, I don’t waste bandwidth sending pages to spammers.

As someone mentioned before, Bad Behavior can’t be ignored for easy spam fighting. I’ve found it extremely effective. Just a few stragglers I have to pick off. But it blocks hundreds of bots a day.

I know it will never make a top plugins list, but I just finished my first wordpress plugin. It’s another AJAX contact form, but with better feedback and security. Fully accessible and degradable, designed with web standards in mind. Sorry to keep plugging my own stuff here, it just seems like such an enthusiastic group and exactly the type of people who might be interested.

    I’ll shut up now.

  100. Nick at Fan Spoiler Says:

This is the best list I have seen. Do you know of a plugin for managing a large number of categories?

For instance, I have these base categories: TV, movies, celebrities, sports, music and videogames…

With about 300 sub-categories. This is primarily for search engine optimization, but we post frequently to literally all of them.

So, my only problem is that all of the categories display on the main page, with the parent categories next to the child categories. I don’t want someone seeing “TV” between its child categories.

Is there a plugin that makes them expandable/collapsible based on category depth? Or, for best SEO, one that only shows the parent categories on the main page, then when you click on TV the next page only shows TV, with its children in a collapsible tree? Anything like this would be great…

I have tried the “Fold Category List” plugin by Robert Schumann but it has some problems.

Thanks a bunch of your concise list of great plugins!

can viruses be posted to blogs?

  111. Vlad Says:

Fundraiser: Well to keep the spammers away, you need to activate Akismet, which is automatically installed with all wordpress powered blogs.
And you can always moderate every comment in the admin in wordpress, you will not get any comments that are racist or any hatred comments if you moderate them and activate wordpress.
And I haven’t heard “viruses” being posted on blogs.

[...] I’m getting more and more comfortable with Wordpress. Wordpress is not difficult to use at all, but the more I dig into the guts of it the more I want to extend it. The easiest way to do this is of course via plugins. There are tons and tons of WP plugins out there. The Blog Join listed their top 10… I gotta say some of they sound seriously cool. The ones that really stand out are Google Sitemaps which generate Google compliant sitemaps of your WordPress blog, SRG Clean Archives a super clean archive, and WP Paginate which lets you create pagination for static pages (something I’ve always found limiting in WP). Great List! This is going to keep me busy going through these.

Hopefully this insn’t covered in one of the above, I did a quick browse first, but what I am looking for is a way to fill my main blog site with random or recent content from my subdomain blogs.

I have checkmyhead.com and users can register and get a free blog and it becomes a subdomain, like bill.checkmyhead.com so I want the main domain blog to just kind of fill up and display content from the subdomains, or maybe even theblogjoint.com or some other blogs.

I have a feeling this is similar to what feeds are, but I am getting pretty confused. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I also want to have a blog somewhere else, but have it pull the articles from my personal blog, I see people do it all the time, but I dont know how.

    Thanks

A very useful collection. However, I think that there are just a few plugins that really matter: akismet (anti-spam protection), SEO plugins, e-mail this to a friend and similar ones, but visual stuff is just made for fun. IMHO, it doesn’t add to usability or functionality: like all those flashy things, avatars, etc. Nice list anyway.
