posted by: Vlad AkilovHere is a great list that I whipped together of some of the most useful and most popular Wordpress plugins, if you don’t yet have wordpress, or don’t know what it is head over to wordpress.org, its a blogging software, which is awesome!
Enjoy the list.
Akismet - Is a spam filter that checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they are spam or not, also checks the trackbacks for spam.
Ultimate Tag Warrior - Best Tag system for WordPress. You can use categories and tag system on one website which is very cool.
Exec-PHP - Execute PHP code in posts or static pages. When this plugin is on you can add php code to static pages or even posts.
Google Sitemaps - This generator will create a Google compliant sitemap of your WordPress blog.
No Ping Wait - Speeds up posting by moving generic pings to execute-pings.php.
PXS Mail Form - Creates a mail form with multipart verification, various messages and an auto redirect on successful send. It is much more easy to contact with website author.
Super Archive - Implements a dynamic archive, the best archives system i know.
SRG Clean Archives - Super clean archive. Very simple and useful.
WP lightbox 2 - Overlay images on the current page for WordPress. You can turn it on and all images are now working with it.
fQuick - Sidenotes, short notes for WordPress. You can place it for example in sidebar.
CG-FlashyTitles - Implementation of sIFR 2.0 Flash-based - Nice graphical flash titles for WP. Very easy to install.
flickrRSS - Integrate the photos from a flickr rss feed into your site. Show flickr photos on your website.

Gravatars - Adds a nice looking graphic next to the persons comments.
Get Recent Comments - Display the most recent comments or trackbacks with your own formatting in the sidebar or where you want.
WP Paginate - Create pagination for pages. It is the best plugin for that makes navigation easy with many static pages.
wp-notable - Add social bookmark links such as digg or del.icio.us to each blog entry
Adsense-Deluxe - Support for AdSense ads and allows you to add ads to posts.
WP-ContactForm - A way for people to contact you without actually emailing you, saves time, and great way to avoid spam.
PodPress - Got a podcast? PodPress makes it really easy to post podcasts, also includes an inline media player.
Related Posts - Link to related posts on your blog, which is based on the content of the post.
Update:
WP-Cache - An extremely efficient WordPress page caching system to make your site much faster and responsive. It works by caching Worpress pages and storing them in a static file for serving future requests.

You (yes, all two of you.. maybe three) can get you own avatar by signing up at Gravatar.com, using the same email address you use for your gonad.org account, or manually specifying an image on your profile page. As of right now, you can’t directly upload an image as your avatar, but that’s for another day’s tinkering. (If you’re clever, you could use the post editor upload function to upload an image to be used as your avatar, I suppose..) If you use Ultimate Tag Warrior, I’ve put together some bugfixes and mods for version 3.14 that are available here. The mod adds an autotag feature that will search your current tag database and return suggested tags for the current post. It also fixes the yahoo and tagyu suggest features on some browsers, as well as the superajax function.

wp-sociable http://www.maxpower.ca/sociable/2006/01/26/:
A simple plugin which lists a range of social bookmarking sites allowing visitors to quickly socially bookmark the post/page they are currently viewing.
Authimage http://www.gudlyf.com/index.php?p=376 :

I posted a similar list of favorites on my blog a few weeks ago and am glad to see that a lot of the items on your list match my own.
I updated my Akismet plugin with the modified version made by Rich Boakes. His version gives the option of adding the IP address of the spammers into your htaccess file and blocking the spammers from even accessing your site. I went from getting 20-30 spam comments a day down to 1-3 per week. Plus, I don’t waste bandwidth sending pages to spammers.

As someone mentioned before, Bad Behavior can’t be ignored for easy spam fighting. I’ve found it extremely effective. Just a few stragglers I have to pick off. But it blocks hundreds of bots a day.
I know it will never make a top plugins list, but I just finished my first wordpress plugin. It’s another AJAX contact form, but with better feedback and security. Fully accessible and degradable, designed with web standards in mind. Sorry to keep plugging my own stuff here, it just seems like such an enthusiastic group and exactly the type of people who might be interested.
I’ll shut up now.
September 4th, 2006 at 12:35 am
Thanx for the suggestion Vlad! Pardon, I should clarify: I’m looking for a tool to specifically target and ban abusive users, as opposed to a broader spamnet sort of solution. Anything you’d recommend for that? I’ll check out Spam Karma too. Muchly appreciated!

Great collection of wordpress plugins. The feed burner feed replacement plugin has been updated and can be found here.
Less is a simple plugin that removes the #more-ID from the read more link. Instead of jumping to the middle of the post where the #more tag is, it shows the entire post. Makes things a little neater.
I have another one that cleans up the dashboard a little bit, and leaves only the important info, but can’t find the link to the page for it right now because it replaces the index.php file in the admin folder and isn’t actually activated through the plugins page. It’s a good one to have though. Just my thoughts on a few good plugins to add to the list.

This is the best list I have seen. Do you know of a plugin for managing a large number of categories?
For instance, I have these base categories: TV, movies, celebrities, sports, music and videogames…
With about 300 sub-categories. This is primarily for search engine optimization, but we post frequently to literally all of them.
So, my only problem is that all of the categories display on the main page, with the parent categories next to the child categories. I don’t want someone seeing “TV” between its child categories.
Is there a plugin that makes them expandable/collapsible based on category depth? Or, for best SEO, one that only shows the parent categories on the main page, then when you click on TV the next page only shows TV, with its children in a collapsible tree? Anything like this would be great…
I have tried the “Fold Category List” plugin by Robert Schumann but it has some problems.
Thanks a bunch of your concise list of great plugins!

How do you keep the spammers from eating you alive? i\’ve seen blogs with nothing but spam postings.
How do you keep some left wing extremist from posting racist or defamatory rhetoric? and if you cant stop them, what are you legally liabel when they do?
can viruses be posted to blogs?

Fundraiser: Well to keep the spammers away, you need to activate Akismet, which is automatically installed with all wordpress powered blogs.
And you can always moderate every comment in the admin in wordpress, you will not get any comments that are racist or any hatred comments if you moderate them and activate wordpress.
And I haven’t heard “viruses” being posted on blogs.

If you’re using a lot of plugins you might find one of my new plugins useful…
Update Manager helps keep all your plugins up to date with the latest versions available, allowing you to check with one-click whether you need to upgrade. New versions will support background checking & notification emails, etc.
It’s so useful, even I use it

[...] I’m getting more and more comfortable with Wordpress. Wordpress is not difficult to use at all, but the more I dig into the guts of it the more I want to extend it. The easiest way to do this is of course via plugins. There are tons and tons of WP plugins out there. The Blog Join listed their top 10… I gotta say some of they sound seriously cool. The ones that really stand out are Google Sitemaps which generate Google compliant sitemaps of your WordPress blog, SRG Clean Archives a super clean archive, and WP Paginate which lets you create pagination for static pages (something I’ve always found limiting in WP). Great List! This is going to keep me busy going through these.
Hopefully this insn’t covered in one of the above, I did a quick browse first, but what I am looking for is a way to fill my main blog site with random or recent content from my subdomain blogs.
I have checkmyhead.com and users can register and get a free blog and it becomes a subdomain, like bill.checkmyhead.com so I want the main domain blog to just kind of fill up and display content from the subdomains, or maybe even theblogjoint.com or some other blogs.
I have a feeling this is similar to what feeds are, but I am getting pretty confused. Can someone point me in the right direction?
I also want to have a blog somewhere else, but have it pull the articles from my personal blog, I see people do it all the time, but I dont know how.
Thanks

Hi!
I’ve made a plugin called WP YouTube. You can edit colors, borders, width, height of all the YouTube videos at the same time in just one setting. Very easy to use!

Hi, great list, but.. why none of the seo plugins made it? I am a long time Xoops and Drupal cms user and there is a big problem to make content search engine friendly.
December 15th, 2007 at 4:45 pm
A very useful collection. However, I think that there are just a few plugins that really matter: akismet (anti-spam protection), SEO plugins, e-mail this to a friend and similar ones, but visual stuff is just made for fun. IMHO, it doesn’t add to usability or functionality: like all those flashy things, avatars, etc. Nice list anyway.
December 18th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
Hey! Awesome collection of plugins. I found this plugin the other day, I’ll link it — SodaHead Wordpress Plugin — It lets you add a fully customizable poll to your Wordpress blog/forum… Though some of you might find this handy

Hi,
I just write a new plugin WP Widget Cache, which can cache the output of your blog widgets. You can treat it as a plus to WP Cache, especially when Google is crawling your site, I think it will significantly reduce your server usage.
Will you please have a try, and add it to this list. Thanks very much.
Here’s the plugin url:

Great List! And love the additions by folks in the comments!
One I don’t see here that is a HUGE time saver and helper to keep your stuff up to date is Wordpress Automatic Upgrades It also works for updating many Plugins. However, I generally wait before upgrading the entire wordpress system as there is often bugs to be worked out shortly after release.
But when your all set this plugin is Great.

I also like to use All in One SEO Pack to optimize my meta tags which help with my search engine ranking. Sociable is also a cool plugin for posting all the social bookmarking sites links on your blog post.

Good list - definitely a few good ones there!
But I’d like to suggest my plugin for addition!
It’s called the Wapple Architect Mobile Plugin for WordPress and it mobilizes your blog. It works for every single device, from a WML phone to a brand new swanky phone with XHTML. Images are dynamically resized and you get the option to really customize your blog any way you want.
In addition, you can upload mobile logos and style your site so the mobile version matches the website and you retain your brand identity.
If you fancy giving it a go, the URL is http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wapple-architect/ - it’d be great to hear your feedback!
If you need any help setting it up or would like any assistance enhancing your mobile blog, get in touch over at http://mobilewebjunkie.com and I’ll do my best to lend a hand!

I use a very cool tool that you might also find helpful - it is called ‘AllWebMenus” and they have an “AllWebMenus WordPress Menus Addin/Plugin’ as well.
With this tool you can create very nice, cross-browser web menus for your blog/site, to add optimized navigation experience.
For those interested, the tool is found here:
